Active Faults' Geometry in the Gulf of Aqaba, Southern Dead Sea Fault, Illuminated by Multibeam Bathymetric Data

چکیده

Detailed knowledge of fault geometry is important for accurate seismic hazard assessment. The Gulf Aqaba, which corresponds to the southern termination 1200-km-long Dead Sea system, remains one least known parts this plate boundary fault, in large part due its location offshore. Classically, Aqaba has been described as a succession three pull-apart basins. Here, building on new multibeam bathymetric survey we provide details about faults at bottom gulf that controls morphology. In particular, identify 50-km-long section shows evidence recent activation. We associate (Aragonese fault) with main ruptured during 1995 magnitude Mw7.3 Nuweiba earthquake. gulf, bathymetry emphasizes strike-slip nature Arnona while dip-slip motion seems be accommodated mostly by located along eastern edge gulf. Considering simple linear and absence any earthquake several centuries, despite an average slip-rate ?5 mm/yr, should considered significant candidate rupture 7 or above near future.

Listeria spp. in the coastal environment of the Aqaba Gulf, Suez Gulf and the Red Sea.

Listeria monocytogenes is an important pathogen which causes an infection called listeriosis. Because of the high mortality rate (~30%) associated with listeriosis, and the widespread nature of the organism, it is a major concern for food and water microbiologists since it has been isolated from various types of foods, including seafood, as well as from the aqueous environment. To investigate t...

Archaea in the Gulf of Aqaba.

Using a polyphasic approach, we examined the presence of Archaea in the Gulf of Aqaba, a warm marine ecosystem, isolated from major ocean currents and subject to pronounced seasonal changes in hydrography. Catalyzed reported deposition FISH analyses showed that Archaea make up to >20% of the prokaryotic community in the Gulf. A spatial separation between the two major phyla of Archaea was obser...

Reproductive strategies of the coral Turbinaria reniformis in the northern Gulf of Aqaba (Red Sea)

Here we describe for the first time the reproductive biology of the scleractinian coral Turbinaria reniformis studied during three years at the coral reefs of Eilat and Aqaba. We also investigated the possibility of sex change in individually tagged colonies followed over a period of 12 years. T. reniformis was found to be a stable gonochorist (no detected sex change) that reproduces by broadca...
